Function first.  The “working triangle” is a great rule of thumb to live by when designing your kitchen.  There is no ideal kitchen shape, it does not matter whether it is L-shaped, U-shaped or even a galley.  The most important thing to keep in mind is to plan for the sink, cooktop and fridge to form a triangle with no more than 6 to 8 feet between each station.  After function, think about your storage options.  Be sure to include enough hideaway spaces for appliances that otherwise would clutter up countertops.

Lighting is everything.  Place enough lighting throughout the kitchen from different levels such as ceiling and under cabinetry to eliminate any casting shadows on your workspace.  It is always better to add more than enough light and control it with dimmers, rather than not having enough light when needed.  Adding final touches such as the perfect countertop, backsplash and stylish hardware will top off the overall look of not only your cabinets, but of your entire kitchen as well.  With the right design choices, the kitchen can easily become one of the most dazzling rooms of your home.
